Introduction ************** Rivers are among the most stressed ecosystems in the world. The assessment of their ecological integrity is necessary to shed light on the effects of human alterations. Evaluating degradation processes provides key-information on how to avoid further negative impacts. The success of future conservation, mitigation and restoration activities relies on sound assessment methodologies and their ecological relevance and applicability. Therefore, assessment methodologies are an integral part of a sustainable river management. The European Commission is in the process of reorganising its river basin management policy based on ecological principles. The assessment of ecological integrity plays an important role within this new river management approach. This international conference on "Assessing the Ecological Integrity of Running Waters" aims to integrate state-of-the-art scientific knowledge on ecological integrity into practical river management. General Information The conference will be held in the city of Vienna, Austria, from 9 - 11 November, 1998. We will provide further information in the second announcement by November 1997.
Conference themes *********************** >> Background of assessment methodologies Biotic and abiotic functions and processes of aquatic ecosystems.Indicators, bioindicators, species diversity, assemblages, population and community levels, genetic integrity
>> Value of indicators within an assessment approach Fish, invertebrates, macrophytes and algae, semi-terrestrial and terrestrial indicators, physical and chemical habitat quality, combined indicators
>> Assessment methodologies Concepts, reference conditions, temporal and spatial scales, monitoring design, practicability, comparability and transferability, harmonisation of different methodologies, presentation format of assessment results, evaluation studies, integrated assessment approaches
