Hopefully one would also look at depths from the surface and from the
bottom, baits and hooksizes which minimize bird catch.  Cod were caught
before the era of trawlers on the Grand Banks with bottom fished baited
hooks, with probably few if any birds caught.  This being the case, the
study should distinguish such parameters.  Trawls, on the other hand,
cause extensive benthic habitat destruction, produce a high bycatch of
other biota, and while they may not kill birds certainly unbalance bird
populations by favoring those that feed on bycatch discards.
