Dear Dr. Booth,
thank you for your information on post-doc fellowships you posted in
"fish-ecology". I visited your web site and realized that you seem to be
one of those lucky marine biologist who have the possibility to work on the
fascinating subjects many of us dream about. From the topics listed on your
homepage those related to coral reef ecology and behaviour are most
appealing to me.
I am 35 years old, my master thesis was on predator-prey interactions
between herring and mysids (perhaps you remember the MEPS article "to see
and not be seen"). For my PhD I studied the diel rhythm of two goby species
and their energy demand for swimming. Thereafter, I was involved in a
project on the effects of moderate hypoxia and oscillating oxygen
conditions on growth, oxygen consumption, behaviour, blood physiology, etc.
of European sea bass and salmon (have a look at our web site
http://www.ifm.uni-kiel.de/fi/ht/oxygen_oscillations.html ). Now, I am
looking forward to concentrate on field work. I was able to get some field
experience in expert opinions for a regional authority and as member of the
scientific dive team of the University of Kiel. Hence, I know that field
work can be very hard (perhaps even more in the subpolar Baltic than in the
GBR?). Nevertheless, I would love to examine the interactions of organisms
in their natural environment and closely cooperate with colleagues having
the same ambition. I must admit that I have not yet worked scientifically
in Coral reefs, but I participated in student excursions to Malaysia and
the Philippines and have also dive experience from private dive holidays to
the Red Sea and the Mediterranean (my passion is UW photography).
If you think I could fit in your working group, then please send me more
details about the fellowships.
Sincerely, Helmut Thetmeyer
