Graduate Research Assistantship

Department of Fisheries and Wildlife
Michigan State University

I have funding for a M.S. or Ph.D. student to work on a research project
focussing on removal of a dam on the Pine River, Michigan. The primary
objectives of the study are to determine the response of fish populations
(several species of trout, sculpins and suckers) and their habitat to the
removal of Stronach Dam. I have preliminary data before dam removal was
initiated, and anticipate that funding will be available through the entire
removal process (4-5 years).

Responsibilities: Sample fish habitat and populations in the Pine River
following established protocols. Supervise two interns in course of field
work. Analysis of data collected, and provide written reports. I will
also encourage the student to develop a component of the research project
to pursue their own interest area.

Qualifications: Applicants must be highly motivated, and interested in
extensive field under demanding conditions (e.g., research site has limited
access, requiring equipment to be packed up to 1/2 mile at times). Good
academic credentials required, preference given to students interested in
mixing field-oriented studies with a training in quantitative aspects of
fish ecology and fisheries science. Preference also given to students with
experience in stream habitat evaluation, boat electroshocking, and other
forms of fisheries-related field work.

Stipend: Stipend is for full calendar year, with 6-credit tuition waiver
and health benefits provided.

Closing date: Selection will be made by Feb 28. Position begins as early
in May 1998 as possible.
