I am looking for a student to work on a project addressing the
transport of larval bay anchovy in estuaries. This will be the
continuation of an existing project, and the funding decision is
pending with a decision expected in March.
Project description:
Larvae of fish and invertebrate species that utilize estuarine
waters as nursery areas are typically advected against, or retained in
spite of, the mean flow outwards. The proposed study continues our
research into the estuarine transport of bay anchovy larvae in the
Hudson River. The project combines fine-scale sampling of larval
distributions with detailed measurements of water column structure and
flow velocities. Analysis of results will involve assimilation of
data on larval distributions, interpretation of the daily age record
in larval otoliths, and estuarine flow patterns.
Student responsibilities:
Participate in research cruise scheduled for June 1998, and
coordinate sample collection with ongoing Hudson River Utilities
cruises. Supervise ichthyoplankton sample workup, and analysis of
larval daily age record. Some component of the project would suffice
for an M.S. thesis; a Ph.D. student would be expected to develop a
complementary line of research.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant will be strongly motivated and academically
talented. Entrants to our graduate programs have GPAs in the mid/high
3s, and GREs in the 90th percentiles. Interest in marine biological
processes, and strong quantitative skills a must; preference will be
given to those who have desire to work on larval fishes.
Stipend:
Support for a full calendar year, includes tuition waver and health
insurance. Terms are contingent on funding level.
