Fisheries Research Position
One full-time temporary fisheries research assistant is being recruited to
assist with sampling of early life history stages of walleye in western
Lake Erie. The duration of this position may extend up to 2 years.
Project Description:
Lake Erie supports the world's largest population of naturally reproducing
walleye. Annual fluctuations in walleye recruitment coupled with recent
changes in the ecology of the lake (due to exotic species invasion and
reduced nutrient loading) inspired research to evaluate and identify
factors influencing recruitment of this important sport and commercial
species. The goal of this research is to identify and quantify factors
influencing growth and survival of reef-spawned walleye eggs and larvae.
Project Location:
Intensive field sampling occurs from late March through June. Work will be
performed from the university-owned 8.3 meter r/v Osmerid. The research
team will reside and work from a cottage located on the shore of western
Lake Erie immediately under the Davis-Bessie nuclear power facility located
north of Route 2 in Oak Harbor, OH (between Pt. Clinton and Toledo).
Sample processing and data analysis will be conducted at the Michigan State
University Fisheries Research Laboratory in East Lansing.
Project Activities:
The successful applicant will assist with the collection of walleye eggs
from reefs, zooplankton and limnological sampling, larval fish sampling,
gillnetting for egg predators, and assorted laboratory work to identify and
quantify collected samples.
Deadline for applicants is March 10, 1998.
Interested persons should send a letter of application and resume including
at least two (2) references to:
