     Biological Statistician - Aquatic Ecology Lab, USGS Biological
     Resource Division, Kearneysville, WV

     A Biological Statistician, GS-1530-09, is expected to be hired to
     perform data analysis and statistical tasks in support of the Aquatic
     Ecology Laboratory, Leetown Science Center, USGS Biological Resources
     Division, Kearneysville, West Virginia.  Annual salary range for the
     GS-9 level appointment is $32,457 - $42,198.

     The primary purpose of this position is to perform statistical
     analysis that assists research scientists in the Aquatic Ecology Lab
     (AEL).  Current research within AEL includes:
     * Development of efficient sampling techniques for rare and patchily
     distributed organisms
     * Studies of land use/land cover, geological, and topographical
     effects on aquatic biodiversity
     * Estimating population parameters from tagging studies
     * Population genetics and dynamics of anadromous fish and freshwater
     mussels
     * Disease transmission in fish and freshwater mussel populations

     The successful candidate will have a B.S. (with experience) or an M.S.
     in statistics or a biological science with substantial course work in
     statistics.  Candidates will be rated on the following factors: 1)
     knowledge of statistical methods such as general linear models,
     categorical data analysis, multivariate data analysis,
     computer-intensive methods, spatial data analysis, experimental
     design, and sampling techniques, 2) knowledge and skill in use of
     statistical software such as SAS and S-PLUS, 3) knowledge of
     statistical applications in biology, ecology, fisheries and aquatic
     sciences, and 4) ability to communicate technical information orally
     and in writing.
