We have used the following preservative ("4CF-1G") for larval striped
bass. The tissue remained clear for long periods, allowing
examination by light microscopy for presence of an inflated swim
     bladder.

     1.16 g NaH2PO4
     0.27 g NaOH
     88 mL water
     10 mL 40% formaldehyde
     2 mL 50% glutaraldehyde

     Refrigerate after preparation of stock.

Prior to use, add 2% DMSO to assist in the rapid transfer of the
     fixative into the tissue.

fixatives suitable for diagnostic light and electron microscopy.
