Position for Programmer Analyst
Dept. of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University
Closing Date Extended: January 16, 1998 or until suitable applicant has

This position announcement is being reposted because the closing date has
been extended.

The quantitative fisheries group in the MSU Fisheries and Wildlife
Department is now seeking a programmer analyst for a full time limited-term
position.  At MSU these limited-term (off-date) positions are funded
through a set date, which may be extended by written mutual agreement.
This position will involve a mix of database management, data analysis, and
computer programming to support our modeling work. The ideal candidate will
have background in population dynamics and modeling and will have strong
computer skills.  Fisheries knowledge a plus.

Programmer Analyst (Grade 11)  Position number P70818 ---   starting Salary
$29,701
Department of Fisheries and Wildlife

REQUIRED: knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in
college, technical, vocational or business school in computer science,
quantitative sciences, or related area; one to three years of related and
progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in developing
computer programs to implement dynamic systems models and database
applications
including statistical computing languages such as SAS or SPSS; familiarity
with WWW, E-mail, and use of networked computer resources; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience.

DESIRED: Experience with Windows 95 and other Microsoft operating systems
and software; Experience programming in a Unix environment, experience with
general linear models and other statistical methods in SAS, experience in
simulation programming using Gauss or similar high level languages,
experience with Mathematica or similar analytical tools. Experience with
managing networked resources (backup systems, mounting file systems,
TCP/IP, Ethernet), and coordinating software/hardware in a multiuser
environment. Experience in creating computer generated graphics for
exploring data and for presentation purposes.

BASIC FUNCTION: assists departmental faculty in quantitative research on
fishery and aquatic systems. Organizes databases, analyzes data according
to instructions, produces graphs of results.  Implements as operating
computer programs (simulation programs) mathematical models developed as
part of faculty/graduate student research. Runs simulation models and
summarizes output. Coordinates use of multiuser Unix/PC computing
environment. Working hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m and may vary. Duties
associated with this position involve working on a video display terminal
70% of the time.

This is an off-date position funded through January 31, 2000
