Justin,

You may already have tried these elementary suggestions, but here goes anyway:

-- Brief immersion in Bouin's solution (1 minute) prior to immersion in 10%
buffered formalin.
-- Make up fresh buffered formalin if using old stock.
-- If feasible, consider using a tuberculin syringe to inject formalin into
the abdominal cavities of the fish (wear goggles!).
