Below please find a description of our new & free bimonthly newsletter,
Atlantic CoastWatch.

The Sustainable Development Institute (SDI), a small non-profit agency
that specializes in environmental communications, has a new program area
called "Atlantic CoastWatch" that follows many years of coastal
observation and policy advocacy. SDI's sponsored and truly free
bimonthly newsletter, Atlantic CoastWatch, is a vital component in our
effort to provide "news that coastal advocates, researchers and managers
can use."  Composed of brief summaries gathered from organizations
between the Gulf of Maine and the eastern Caribbean, Atlantic CoastWatch
provides a readable digest of news and efforts to safeguard our Atlantic
heritage.

Prior to the debut of the Atlantic CoastWatch newsletter, in December
1997, no publication examined, at a glance, developments in
conservation, brownwater issues, economic policy, land management, shore
fortification, aquatic species preservation, etc., along the entire
Atlantic seaboard.  By sorting through and reviewing what small locally
oriented groups are doing, throughout the Atlantic Community, and
distilling that into a brief eight pages, we hope to help our readers
keep aware and abreast of news they may use.  And, through concise and
pithy briefs, we will, as a small non-governmental organization, provide
third party reporting that isn't tied to fundraising handouts but
instead digests works in progress, with references and pointers for
additional information.

The Sustainable Development Institute has two other ongoing program
areas: the Community Forestry Policy Project which has endeavored to
include community forestry management issues into the United Nation's
Convention on Forests; and, the 1998 Environmental Film Festival in the
Nation's Capital.  The recently concluded Development Blueprint for Long
Island, NY with 57 policy guidelines, was a precursor to Atlantic
CoastWatch.

We hope that the compatibility of our respective objectives is clear and
look forward to future exchanges of information with you, as a community
with many shared, but currently under-communicated, experiences begins
to emerge.
