     Research Associate - Stream Ecology/Aquatic Entomology

     The Biological Resources Division of the USGS (BRD) invites
     applications for a 3-year Term Research Associate in Ecology/Aquatic
     Entomology at its Leetown Science Center in Kearneysville, West
     Virginia.  The successful applicant will be expected to perform as a
     principal investigator on a 3-year study designed to examine aquatic
     invertebrate responses to a catastrophic flood event in streams within
     Shenandoah National Park, Virginia.  This is part of a larger,
     collaborative effort between investigators from the BRD, the
     University of Virginia, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State
     University.  Position available in Winter or Spring 1998 for a minimum
     2 year commitment).

     Responsibilities: Assistance with study design and collection of
     macroinvertebrate samples from streams; processing of
     macroinvertebrate samples and identification of macroinvertebrates to
     genus and species; coordinating laboratory procedures involved in
     determining macroinvertebrate secondary production; performing
     statistical analyses of data and preparing interpretive reports.

     Qualifications: M.S. or Ph.D. in Biology, Zoology, Entomology or
     similar field with a strong background in applied and basic aspects of
     stream ecology and aquatic entomology; sound training in aquatic
     insect taxonomy and natural history, statistical analysis, and data
     interpretation; familiarity and/or experience with secondary
     production methods and analysis; proven verbal and writing skills;
     demonstrated leadership and organizational skills and ability to work
     independently while interacting in a team environment.

     Salary commensurate with experience and education.
