        BIOLOGIST, FISHERY RESEARCH

        Current opening is limited service.  Duration of appointment is limited to
specific funding.

        Salary:  $14.27 - $20.99 hourly
        Effective 6/14/198 - Salary:  $14.55 - $21.40 hourly

        REGISTER WILL BE USED TO FILL FUTURE STATEWIDE OPENINGS.
        Some positions may be limited service or permanent.  Be sure to indicate

Duties:
* Conducts life history and habitat studies of fish populations.
* Researches literature for relevant information and conducts project
planning and field      activities.
* Performs data analysis and interpretation and makes recommendations.
* Participates in developing detailed work plans.
* Interviews anglers, conducts creel census, conducts spawning ground
surveys and installs and maintains fish collection devices.
* Collects research and management information at fish and game check
stations.
* Compiles and analyzes data such as age composition and growth rates of
fish populations and prepares project reports.

        Testing Process
        100% Rating of education and experience.  A minimum score of 70 is
required to place on the register.

Examination Scoring Information
The test for this position is an evaluation of your related background.
Minimum requirements are in bold print. For each question, describe all of
your related education, training, and experience. For any education and

This work involves walking for several miles in rugged terrain and along
stream banks; standing and working in cold water for up to five hours per
shift, working in extreme weather conditions, and lifting and carrying
equipment weighing up to 60 pounds with occasional lifting and carrying up
to 100 pounds for short distances. Employees in this class are expected to
participate and to instruct in fishing activities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1.      Employees in this class are expected to participate and to instruct in

FISHERY MANAGEMENT
3.      Describe how you gained good knowledge of fishery management practices
to include habitat requirements, behavior of fish, fish population
dynamics, limnology, stream ecology, taxonomy, diseases of fish, and
aquatic insects.
4.      Describe your experience conducting fishery research projects to include
responsibility for project design and management, data collection, data
analyses, and interpretation and writing a final report of results.
Typically the above knowledge and experience in questions 3 and 4 is
obtained through successful completion of a Master's degree in fishery
management OR a Bachelor's degree in fishery management plus applied
professional research experience and some research experience designing,
gathering, and analyzing fishery data and writing a report of findings. To
obtain the best score, please describe any relevant background you may have
beyond that typically required.

SPORT FISHING
5.      Describe how you gained some knowledge of sport-fishing techniques.

FISH SAMPLING
6.      Describe your experience conducting fish sampling.

COMPUTER RESEARCH
7.      Describe your experience using various software and databases that are
used in fisheries research or other related projects.

COMMUNICATIONS

forum (include frequency of presentations, topic, and number and type of
audience, i.e., sportsmen, professional groups, boards, commissions, etc.).
9.      Describe your experience writing articles for publication in newspapers,
magazines and/or scientific journals.
