Dear fellow fish scientists
I am studying the effect of zander (pikeperch) Stizostedion lucioperca on
fish community structure and have found that they eat bullhead Cottus gobio.
In the UK, this species is a recent introduction and is not regarded as
native. I vaguely remeber that the bullhead was a protected species under
European policy. Does this mean that if zander pose a threat to bullhead
populations then removal of zander should be recommended to protect bullhead.
I think the practice of removing one species to protect another is of
general interest and I look forward to comments. These can be sent to me
personalll ([log in to unmask]) or they can be posted generally to
facillitate a wider discussion.
If I get sufficient interest, I shall post a summary in a couple of weeks.
I thank you in anticipation
