Dear ESFO-L subscribers,

Below follows the text of a job advertisement concerning two PhD
scholarships at the University of Aarhus in Denmark. One of the scholarships
in particular could be of interest to members of this list, since there is
some preference for a project in the Pacific region. I will give the
description of this scholarship first, to be followed by the text of the
official advertisement which will appear in the relevant Danish sources
later this month. Please feel free to forward this advertisement to anyone
you think may be interested. I cannot be contacted until 12 March, because I
will be away on fieldwork in PNG, but those interested may contact
Kristoffer Brix Bertelsen (e-mail address is in the advertisement).

Yours,
Ton Otto

specific description of PhD project number 2

PhD 2 Warfare, society and state formation from an anthropological perspective.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the comparative and
theoretical aims of the project by studying the relationship between
state-formation and warfare in non-western contexts. Anthropological,
archaeological and historical studies provide rich source material for the
comparative study of state-formation in selected areas such as Africa,
Central America and Polynesia. The PhD project could consist of an
evaluation of this substantive literature with the aim of contributing to
the development of an interpretative theoretical framework. Alternatively,
the candidate could focus on a more in-depth study of a limited region,
using various historical and ethnographical sources. Because of the regional
specialization within the research group there is a preference for a
Polynesian case study (especially Tonga, Samoa, Fiji), but the candidate is
free to suggest any other region. The PhD candidate is required to
collaborate closely with the other members of the research team in the war
and society programme, to take part in common seminars and workshops, and to
do a limited amount of teaching.
