The Department of Zoology at North Carolina State University is looking
to immediately fill a vacant position as a fisheries research

POSITION:    Research Technician III
TITLE:  Fisheries Technician
SUPERVISOR: Dr. John M. Miller

This position has technical, managerial and administrative duties.  The
technical duties include supporting fisheries research projects of up to
5 Principal Investigators and their graduate students on the coast of NC
and on campus.  Incumbent will be expected to collect, process and
analyze fish, fisheries and associated environmental data.  Managerial
duties include maintaining and operating boats and field equipment and
training students in their use.  On-site decisions to deploy equipment
and abort cruises will be made.  Incumbent will also make decisions on
repair or replacement of equipment to maintain a field and lab
capability for research.  Administrative duties include supervising and
scheduling use of field and lab equipment and anticipating budget needs
for grants.  Work with preservatives and pesticides will be required.
Analytical duties include data reduction and procession with
statistical, graphic, GIS and date base management software.  The
incumbent will be expected to consult independently with experts on
technical and analytical matters, which may require travel to scientific
meetings and other aquatic research facilities.

Interact with public and state and federal management agencies; budget
reporting; train and supervise hourly helpers.

Occasionally long hours, or days in the field, otherwise mostly lab.

Bachelors Degree in Zoology, Fisheries Biology, or similar, with two
years field and lab experience, Masters Degree preferred.  A working
knowledge of boats, sampling gear, and environmental meters is
required.  Included are trawls, benthic and plankton samplers,
electroshocking gear, and GPS.  Analytical duties require a working
knowledge of marine and freshwater fish otolith analysis and a strong
background in computers.
