REPORT OVERVIEW (brief)
The fishing industry is coming under increasing international pressure due
to overfishing and the need for sustainable harvesting. A range of
international environmental instruments seek to impact fishing industry and
fisheries management practices. Fisheries trade is also being influenced by
international environmental trade initiatives. Recent cases developments
are
reviewed and trends identified.
The report comprehensively describes 14 international binding and
non-binding instruments which can directly, or indirectly, impact the way
fishing is undertaken and managed. The practical implications of each of
these instruments is identified and discussed in the context of the
Australian fishing industry. Fisheries
environment/trade cases and initiatives are also discussed.
The fishing industry is reacting to these initiatives and is in a period of
change. "Responsible fishing" and "Codes of Conduct" are at the core of the
fishing industry response. Government and Non-Government Organisations are
calling for more changes: in production methods; protecting marine species
and areas; and responsible fishing, leading to more accountable management
regimes.
The Australian industry have recognised these changes and is responding to
the challenges. Eight internal and four external strategic responses for
the
fishing industry are proposed and discussed.
The international pressure for change will continue and will bring change
to both industry and government. It is to the long term
benefit of industry to respond positively to these international
initiatives.
