DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Chair provides comprehensive program leadership and administrative support to the teaching, research, and extension functions of the Department. Administrative responsibilities include: program development and coordination; budgetary and personnel management; faculty recruitment and promotion; liaison with state, federal, and international agencies, professional and non-governmental organizations, and cooperating units within the University; and promotion of funding opportunities for the Department. The Chair must work effectively with the Department's faculty and IFAS administrators on program planning and implementation. Regular involvement in the graduate program through instruction and mentoring will be encouraged. The Chair reports administratively to the Vice-President for Agriculture and Natural Resources, and programmatically to the Deans for Research, Extension, and Academic Programs. The Chair must provide leadership for diversity in human resources and promote the Affirmative Action Plan of the University of Florida
QUALIFICATIONS: The Chair must have: an earned doctorate in fisheries, aquatic sciences, or a closely related field; demonstrated leadership abilities and integrity; demonstrated administrative skills; a strong teaching, research, and/or extension background with an excellent record of program accomplishments commensurate with the rank of tenured Professor; outstanding communication skills with a variety of audiences; and a strong commitment to administrative duties and responsibilities. The Chair must have experience in fostering synergistic, collaborative relationships and a keen interest in doing so within the Department, IFAS, and the University, and at the state, federal, and international levels. The Chair must understand and support the missions of a land-grant university.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences was founded in 1984 and has grown from 3 to 14 tenure-track faculty, 3 non-tenure accruing faculty, and 14 affiliate or courtesy faculty. The Department now has 37 full-time staff (professional, administrative, and technical) and more than 40 graduate students and post-docs. The Department offers an undergraduate minor and graduate programs leading to M.S., non-thesis Master's, and Ph.D. degrees in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Instructional programs are supported by the College of Agriculture, outreach and public education programs by the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, and research programs by the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station. The Department generates well over $1,000,000 annually in contracts and grants.
The Mission of the Department is to advance basic and applied knowledge of the biological structure, function, and productivity of aquatic ecosystems. The Department currently identifies program areas in Freshwater Systems, Coastal Marine Systems, and Aquaculture, and yet the faculty, students, and staff apply their diverse disciplines (i.e., numerous specialties within ecology, physiology, veterinary medicine, and genetics) across program areas. Particular strengths exist in water quality (especially nutrient dynamics and ecosystem function), the ecology of exploited species, reproduction of aquatic animals, and aquatic animal health. Faculty programs are interrelated within and among these core strengths.
The Department facilities are located along with the IFAS Center for Aquatic & Invasive Plants and the USGS Florida Caribbean Science Center just outside Gainesville on a satellite campus 9 miles from the main University of Florida campus. The Department also has faculty and facilities at the Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory in Ruskin, FL and the Sam Mitchell Aquaculture Demonstration Facility near Blountstown, FL. Research and extension facilities are also accessible at the University's Whitney Laboratory on the Atlantic coast south of St. Augustine, FL, and both the UF Marine Laboratory and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Laboratory on the Gulf coast at Cedar Key, FL.
Gainesville is an attractive city of about 125,000, located in north central Florida midway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The region has extensive natural resources, many lakes and rivers, and large natural areas.
