Dear Fish Ecology Folks:

My name is Marisa Kilman and I am a student and currently working with the
Department of Environmental Protection in Florida.  I am working on a paper and
trying to define a Fish Kill and those standard procedures used to carry out
investigations.  To do this, in addition to literature searches, I am gathering
information on how different States investigate fish kills.  If you are not
involved in handling and investigating fish kills would you please pass this
e-mail on to whoever is involved in this type of work.

Would you be so kind as to answer a few questions and perhaps send me a copy of
your protocol (algorithm) that you use for investigation of fish kills.

know and I will send you a copy when it is finished.

1. Do you mainly investigate fish kills in saltwater, freshwater or estuaries?

2. How do you decide what constitutes a fish kill?

3. Is protocol for an event where fish show signs of disease or lesions
different than when there is a sudden (few days) fish kill?

4. How do you decide when it is necessary to investigate, and what factors
influence this decision?

5. Under what circumstances would you decide not to follow up and investigate a
reported fish kill?
