Jeff - I used Smith-Root Model 12 battery powered backpack units extensively for backcountry work in the Shoshone National Forest surveying for YSC.  I dont know how they compare to Coffelt, but I was impressed with the SR's reliability and durability under harsh and hectic field conditions.
